KVK Karbi Anglong holds livestock awareness programme for SC farmers

DIPHU, July 31: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Karbi Anglong, under Assam Agricultural University, in collaboration with ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema, successfully conducted an awareness programme on scientific livestock farming and frontline demonstration under the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) on July 29 at New Basti village in Karbi Anglong district.

According to an official statement, the initiative aimed to promote scientific animal husbandry practices among Scheduled Caste farmers and enhance rural livelihoods through improved livestock management.

The programme also focused on capacity-building to ensure long-term food security in the region.

In his welcome address, Dr Monuj Kr Doley, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Karbi Anglong, lauded the collaborative effort and highlighted the importance of extending such outreach programmes to economically disadvantaged farming communities.

Subject matter experts, including Dr Jayanta Kumar Chamuah, Dr Narendra, and Dr Harshid from ICAR-NRC on Mithun, along with Dr Avinash Timung, Veterinary Officer, Bokolia State Dispensary, conducted training sessions on animal health care, nutrition, disease prevention, and scientific livestock rearing practices.

A frontline demonstration of institute-developed technologies and recommended best practices was also conducted during the event.

More than 35 local farmers participated, along with officials from the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department and Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ASRLMS).

As part of the initiative, critical livestock inputs such as vitamins, minerals, and anthelmintics were distributed to the beneficiaries.

Training materials were also provided to support adoption of improved methods.

The programme concluded with an interactive session, where farmers engaged with the experts to clarify doubts and share experiences.

The event ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Shourov Dutta, Subject Matter Specialist (Horticulture), KVK Karbi Anglong.

The programme was well received by the farming community and is expected to contribute significantly to the development of livestock-based livelihoods among Scheduled Caste households in the region.
