DIPHU, Jan 03: Amidst a hectic schedule overseeing the preparation for the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Karbi Youths Festival (KYF), Richard Tokbi, the executive member (EM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and general secretary of the Reception Committee for the 50th KYF, found time to engage in an election campaign in Hangrum MAC Constituency in Dima Hasao.
He was seeking votes for BJP candidate Noah Daime in the upcoming NC Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) voting scheduled for January 8.
On Tuesday, the EM attended an election rally in support of BJP candidate Noah Daime. In his speech, he appealed to the voters of the constituency to cast their votes for the lotus flower symbol, supporting Noah Daime for unbridled peace and development in the constituency, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for inclusive growth.
EM Tokbi stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is an astute leader, and chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is a visionary leader.
“Under their leadership, more development will be implemented in Dima Hasao,” he added.
Candidate Noah Daime, president of the BJP Local Committee Henagaing Newme, secretary of the BJP NC Hills District Committee Robert Riame, along with Sarkari Goan Buras and Goan Buras, participated in the election meeting.
It’s worth mentioning that the chief executive member (CEM) of KAAC, along with EMs, MACs, and MLA Darsing Ronghang, are camping in Umrangso to seek votes for BJP candidate Samsing Engti from the Garampani MAC constituency.
In last month December, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC) had announced the names of all their 28 candidates for the forthcoming Members of Autonomous Council (MAC) election to the 13 NC Hills Autonomous Council, scheduled for January 8, 2024.
According to an official statement, the selection was done by the committee formed by the BJP. The declaration was made formally in the office of the BJP Assam Pradesh on Tuesday.
In this election, a few new candidates were included, such as Mohet Hojai, Niranjan Hojai, Rupali Langthasa, S T Jem Hrangkhol, and Namrang Jeme.
“Apart from this, several new faces were seen in constituencies like Mahur, Langting, Dautuhaja, Maibang (E), and Maibang (W). In the prestigious Haflong constituency, where the BJP has never won an election so far, the saffron party has chosen the present president of BJP Dima Hasao,” the statement added.
On the other hand, Congress also released a list of its party candidates for the said election.
Earlier, the election commissioner, Alok Kumar, had said that due to the unavailability of electronic voting machines (EVMs), the election would employ traditional ballot papers.
He further informed that the deadline for filing nominations in all 28 constituencies is December 21, with application scrutiny slated for the following day.
The total voters count in Dima Hasao district’s constituencies is 1,41,124, with 70,485 men and 70,639 women, he said.
“Withdrawal of candidature can be done until December 22, and the final list of candidates will be published on the same day. Polling hours are set from 8 am to 4 pm on January 8, while the counting of votes will take place on January 12. In the event of re-polling requirements, it is scheduled for January 10,” Kumar added.
