GUWAHATI, Aug 26: The directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption, Assam on Friday caught two state government employees – one lat mandal Ranjit Goswami from Karimganj district and another Azharul Islam, district programme officer from lower Assam’s Dhubri district red handed for taking bribe.
Lat Mandal Goswami worked at the office of the circle officer, Karimganj sadar circle while district programme officer, Azharul Islam worked at the district mission co-ordinator, Sarba Siksha Abhijan, Dhubri district.
According to the directorate, Goswami, who worked at the office of the circle officer, Karimganj Sadar Circle, had demanded a bribe amounting to Rs 25,000 from the complainant for mutation of land in the name of the complainant.
Following the complaint, a trap was laid on Friday by a team of the directorate in the office premises of the circle officer. “Goswami was caught red handed at 3:45 PM, in the office, soon after he accepted Rs. twenty thousand only as bribe from the complainant. A case has been registered in ACB Police Station on Friday itself vide ACB P.S. Case No. 34/2022 U/S 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) against Goswami,” the directorate said.
On the other hand, district programme officer Azharul Islam had demanded bribe of rupees twenty-five thousand from the complainant for releasing his outstanding salary for the month of April, May and June of the current year. However, Islam later reduced the bribe amount to rupees ten thousand.
“A trap was laid on Friday by a team of the directorate in a Sweet Shop in Dhubri town namely ‘Dada Bhai Mistanna Bhandar’. Islam was caught red handed at 2.07 PM, in the shop, soon after he accepted demanded bribe of rupees ten thousand from the complainant,” the directorate said.
Notably, a case has been registered in ACB Police Station on Friday vide ACB P.S. Case No. 33/2022 U/S 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) against Islam.
