Guwahati, Nov 20: Rail services on one of Assam’s busiest routes, the Lumding–Guwahati section of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), were severely disrupted on Saturday after the Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express derailed following a collision with an elephant near the Jamunamukh–Kampur stretch under the Lumding Division.
The accident brought train movement on the down line to a near standstill, prompting cancellations, short-terminations, and operational adjustments across Assam and the broader Northeast.
Senior railway officials, including the NFR General Manager, rushed to the site to supervise emergency response and track restoration. Teams were deployed immediately, and repair work is underway to resume normal services as soon as possible.
Nine Trains Cancelled, Services Disrupted
As a direct impact, nine trains scheduled for December 20 were cancelled, affecting daily commuters and long-distance travellers alike. The cancelled services include:
- Rangiya–New Tinsukia Express
- Guwahati–Jorhat Town Jan Shatabdi Express
- Guwahati–Badarpur Vistadome Express
- New Tinsukia–Rangiya Express
- Mariani–Guwahati Express
- Lumding–Guwahati Passenger
- Jorhat Town–Guwahati Jan Shatabdi Express
- Badarpur–Guwahati Vistadome Express
- Guwahati–Lumding Passenger
To manage congestion, some trains were short-terminated. The Alipurduar–Mariani Express was terminated at Digaru, while the Mariani–Alipurduar Express now originates from Digaru, with services suspended between Mariani and Digaru.
Long-distance trains connecting Assam to other parts of India, including the Kanchanjunga Express, Vivek Express, Kamrup Express, Avadh Assam Express, Rajdhani Express, and Humsafar Express, faced delays or were held at stations such as Lumding, Hojai, Guwahati, Chaparmukh, Jugijan, and Panikhaiti.
The Northeast Frontier Railway has advised passengers to check real-time train status via official channels and warned that further operational changes may occur until full restoration of services.
