MARGHERITA, June 12: On Monday, the Margherita Block Congress Committee, led by president Tara Prasad Dehingia, vice president Toufik Khan, Margherita Assembly Youth Congress Committee president Avishek Beldar, Margherita Assembly NSUI president Abhijit Baruah, Pranjal Chetia, and several other workers and leaders, submitted a memorandum to the chief minister of Assam through the Margherita sub divisional officer (civil). The memorandum highlights the need to conduct panchayat elections on time and use symbols of various political parties.
Tara Prasad Dehingia stated that the Panchayati Raj system has played a significant role in strengthening the foundations of Indian democracy and has been instrumental in bringing about revolutionary changes in grassroots development throughout the country. The Panchayati Raj system represents a three-tier structure of Indian administration, and its primary objective is to establish local self-government in districts, zones, and rural villages. However, due to the contentious politics of the present government, panchayat elections have been postponed, which should be held as per the scheduled time, according to Tara Prasad Dehingia.
In accordance with the constitutional guidelines and principles of the Panchayati Raj structure, the term of a panchayat is five years, and it is the constitutional responsibility of the State Election Commission to regularly hold free and fair panchayat elections every five years. This ensures better, efficient administration and facilitates rapid progress in the country, added Tara Prasad Dehingia.
As the current term of the Panchayat is expiring soon, we, the united opposition political parties, demand that the state government ensures that the panchayat elections are held on time and that symbols of various political parties are used. This will provide an opportunity for voters to exercise their constitutionally authorised democratic rights in the panchayat elections, said Tara Prasad Dehingia, president of the Margherita Block Congress Committee.
Meanwhile, the Hapjan Block Congress Committee also submitted a memorandum through the Margherita sub divisional officer to the chief minister of Assam, urging the timely conduct of panchayat elections and the use of symbols of various political parties.
