Eid-ul-Azha, also known as Qurbani Eid, is scheduled to be observed on May 28.

The decision was formally announced during a press conference held on Saturday in Margherita, where members of the committee said the move was taken in the interest of maintaining peace, social harmony and law and order.

According to the committee, an important meeting was held on May 20 between the Margherita Co-District Administration, Assam Police officials and local Muslim leaders.

During the meeting, the Central Margherita Muslim Committee assured full cooperation with government policies and administrative directives related to the festival.

Committee leaders stated that Eid-ul-Azha symbolises sacrifice, devotion and purification of the heart, and emphasised that it was the responsibility of every citizen to ensure that celebrations do not hurt the sentiments of others or disturb the atmosphere of brotherhood in society.

“The social harmony and brotherhood that has existed among us for generations is paramount. Along with religious practices, fulfilling social responsibility is also part of our faith,” the leaders said during the press conference.

The committee also appealed to all mosque management committees under the Margherita Co-District to strictly follow administrative guidelines and support the decision.

Among those present at the press conference were Maulana Rustam Ali, Uzair Alam Khan, Alfaz Ahmed, social worker Md. Toufik Khan and Moinur Haque Talukdar, along with members of mosque committees, local residents and youth representatives. The decision has been widely appreciated by local residents and various organisations, many of whom described it as a responsible and far-sighted initiative that would further strengthen communal harmony and mutual respect in Assamese society.
