GUWAHATI, Oct 19: In a significant step ahead of the upcoming Bye-Election 2024, the Office of the Principal cum chief superintendent of Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) has set up a dedicated medical board to evaluate and certify individuals seeking medical exemptions from election duties.
This initiative, aimed at streamlining the process of granting exemptions, was ordered on October 18, 2024, in accordance with election requirements in the Cachar district.
The Medical Board, composed of 22 specialist doctors from various departments of SMCH, will convene twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays, from 11 AM to 2 PM, at the Conference Hall of the Administrative Building, SMCH. The board is tasked with ensuring that applications for exemption are carefully assessed by medical professionals to guarantee that only those with legitimate health concerns are excused from their election duties.
Led by the principal cum chief superintendent of SMCH, Dr Bhaskar Gupta, the board’s multidisciplinary approach ensures a thorough evaluation process, with decisions grounded in medical expertise. The board’s meetings are designed to expedite the review of exemption requests, ensuring that government employees involved in the election process are assessed swiftly and fairly.
This initiative comes in response to a directive from the Office of the joint director of health services, Cachar, which aims to support the smooth conduct of the upcoming elections while addressing the valid medical concerns of individuals. By creating a streamlined and transparent process, the establishment of the medical board helps maintain the integrity of the election process, ensuring that those who are medically fit fulfill their election duties while allowing those with genuine health conditions to seek exemptions.
The formation of the medical board is seen as a critical step in balancing civic responsibility with healthcare needs, and reflects Silchar Medical College’s active role in facilitating the election process in Cachar. This specialised system aims to prevent any misuse of medical exemptions while ensuring that those with legitimate health issues are properly evaluated and certified.
The move has been welcomed as a key component of the district’s efforts to ensure a well-coordinated election process, where all eligible individuals are given a fair opportunity to serve, unless exempted for genuine medical reasons.
