TEZPUR, April 4: Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH) here launched its Swachhta Pakhwada, a fortnight-long programme aimed at promoting cleanliness and sanitation across its various departments and sections. Running from April 1 to 15, the event aligns with the national Swachh Bharat Mission and seeks to foster a culture of hygiene and responsibility among staff, patients, and the community.
The inaugural session which was conducted under the guidance and supervision of Director Dr. J. Hazarika, held on April 1, was organized by the Department of Psychiatric Nursing and saw participation from key figures including Dr. Kushal Kumar Tamuli, Assistant Medical Superintendent (AMS) and Head of various departments, alongside employees and students. Dr. Hemanta Datta, Deputy Director of the Institute, presented a detailed activity plan for the 15-day campaign, outlining a series of initiatives designed to enhance cleanliness and awareness.
The Swachhta Pakhwada features a diverse range of activities, including cleanliness drives in the Outpatient Department (OPD), pamphlet distribution to educate the public, and awareness programs targeting staff and visitors. Patients attending the rehabilitation center will participate in drawing and craft-making competitions, while voluntary *shramdaan* (labor donation) efforts will focus on systematically arranging official files, compiling lists of obsolete items, and sorting unserviceable materials. Additional measures include training food handlers and attendant staff on preventive and safety practices.
A highlight of the campaign will be its alignment with World Health Day on April 7, featuring special activities such as the distribution of hand washing “Swachhta Kits” to underprivileged children and homeless mentally ill female patients. The initiative also emphasizes environmental responsibility, with plans for segregation and disposal of biomedical waste, solid waste management, and menstrual hygiene awareness. Children of campus residents will join in a drawing competition to engage the younger generation in the cleanliness drive.
The closing ceremony on April 15 will celebrate the efforts of participants, with the distribution of Kayakalp certificates to “Swachhta Heroes” from various sections of the institute, recognizing their contributions to the campaign’s success. The vote of thanks during the inaugural event was delivered by Dr. Kunjalata Gogoi, Assistant Professor of Psychiatric Nursing, who expressed gratitude to all involved for their commitment to the cause. LGBRIMH’s Swachhta Pakhwada reflects a holistic approach to cleanliness, combining practical action with community engagement and education. As the campaign unfolds over the next two weeks, it aims to set a benchmark for sanitation and hygiene practices in healthcare institutions across the region.
