JORHAT, June 18: State minister for food, public distribution and consumer affairs, mines and minerals and Barak Valley development, Kaushik Rai on Wednesday attended an awareness conference held at the Assam Agricultural University (AAU) campus here.
The conference focused on the government’s proposed initiative to distribute subsidised sugar, masoor dal (red lentil), and salt to ration card holders under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Rai highlighted the ongoing free foodgrain distribution programme initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which benefits over 80 crore people.
He announced that the government plans to expand this initiative by introducing subsidised distribution of essential food items to NFSA beneficiaries from October this year.
Rai called for cooperation from fair price shop dealers, Gaon Panchayat cooperative societies, and other stakeholders for effective implementation of the scheme.
He stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the government is committed to launching several welfare schemes for the people through the public distribution system.
The event was attended by fair price shop owners, representatives from Gaon Panchayat cooperative societies, Assam State Warehousing Corporation (ASWC), and officials of the district administration.
Also present were Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, Titabar MLA Bhaskarjyoti Baruah, and Assam Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (AIIDC) Chairman Santanu Puzari, who is also the Jorhat district BJP president.
Following the programme, Minister Rai chaired a review meeting at the Jorhat Circuit House Conference Hall with officials of the Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department to assess the progress of ongoing schemes in the district.
Mariani and Titabar MLAs, along with Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Jay Shivani, were also present.
