Mob beat up tax officials in Karbi Aanglong, three arrested

BOKAJAN, Oct 27: Three persons were arrested by the police in connection with an incident where a mob allegedly beat up officials of the Taxation department, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) at Sukhanjan in Karbi Anglong under Bokajan Police Station on Thursday.

Reportedly, tax officials were on their regular rounds checking for trade licenses and apprising traders on the need to pay taxes to the Government when the incident happened.

While doing so, a person identified as Bijoy Singh arrived in a two-wheeler and asked the shopkeepers to shut their shops. Subsequently, the officials were surrounded by a mob numbering in the hundreds armed with sticks, iron rods, stones and daos and beat them up.

A trader who has a shop at Sukhanjan said that he has got wind of the impending attack five days prior. He tried to save the tax officials from being attacked from the mob when they were surrounded. In the process, he was also beaten up by the mob with iron rods and injured which required three stitches. The mob shouted slogans of “dadagiri nosolibo, nosolibo, nosolibo” and marched from Sukhanjan to Bokajan police station.

KAAC Tax inspector Nickson Terang was assaulted and his uniform was torn. A member of the public Mohen Tokbi was also injured while trying to save the officials.

Inspector of Taxes, Nickson Terang filed a complaint with Bokajan police station.

The three apprehended are Raj Kr. Ray (39), resident of Sukanjan, Jhagru Shah (56), resident of Sukanjan and Raju Kr Tripathi (37), resident of Sarihajan, all under Bokajan police station.

Meanwhile, the traders alleged that the KAAC tax officials often collect ‘fine’ from them without giving them any receipts.
