Monoranjan Bori to receive Hemanta Kumar Baruah Memorial Youth Award

TEZPUR, Sept 25: Noted story writer and promising journalist Monoranjan Bori will be awarded the ‘Hemanta Kumar Baruah Memorial Youth Award’ for this session in an award-giving function to be organised in connection with the 3rd death anniversary of the noted litterateur, educationist, and social worker on September 29 at the Alumni Gallery of Darrang College here. Being a promising journalist and popular writer, Monoranjan Bori has already engraved his place in the hearts of different sections of Assamese readers with his creations like ‘Moh-Jakh’ (a short story collection), ‘Sikitsha Vigyan’, ‘Mising Samaj Aru Lokaviswas’, ‘Tumi Oinitom Hoi Baji Thaka’ (a poetry collection), ‘Abu Tunturungar Hadhu’ (a collection of Mising folk tales), and ‘Noi Gaon’. Besides publishing numerous thought-provoking articles and literary pieces in newspapers and magazines, he has already edited several noted collections, including ‘Jatindra Kumar Borgohain Rasanawali’, ‘Mohiruh’, ‘Mrityu Gosoki Aana Joi Jini’, ‘Sangbadikota Aru Asomor Sangbadik’, and ‘Midang’, etc. His noteworthy creations have earned great fame in the Assamese literary field, for which he has already been awarded the Munin Barkataky Literary Award-2019 for his Assamese short story collection ‘Moh-Jakh’, the ‘Parag Kumar Das Yuva Sangbadik Bota-2020’ given by Asam Sahitya Sabha, the Mohendra Nath Hazarika Literary Award-2021 instituted by Kamargaon Anchalik Sangbadik Sangstha, the Hemadhar Patir Memorial Award given by Mising World, a socio-cultural organisation in 2015, a Media Fellowship in 2017 given by UNICEF Assam in association with the department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Gauhati University, National Media Fellow in 2014 given by REACH, a national organisation in Chennai, Media Fellow on ‘modern medicinal methods’ by Guwahati Neurology Research Centre, Assam, in 2013, Writers Fellow offered on ‘Ethno Traditional Medicine and Supernatural Beliefs of the Mising Tribe of Assam’ by the Publication Board Assam, Govt. of Assam in 2012, and Media Fellow on ‘Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction’ given by Action Aid Assam, an international NGO, in association with Guwahati Press Club in 2009. A working journalist, Bori is presently serving as the news editor of the Assamese daily ‘Dainik Janambhumi’ and has also dedicated his service as a senior sub-editor, staff reporter, etc., in several Assamese dailies.

Meanwhile, along with the award-giving ceremony, an oration on ‘Samprotik Prekshapotat Jatiya Bixoy Aru Sangbad Madhyamor Bhumika’ (National Issues in the Present Context and the Role of the Media) will be held, where eminent journalist of the state, Mrinal Talukdar, will deliver the lecture on the topic.

It needs to be mentioned here that the late Hemanta Kumar Baruah, who served LOKD College at Dhekiajuli for a long stint as the head of the department of Education, was associated with a number of social organisations in the region. A former president of Tezpur Sahitya Sabha, Baruah was an academician in the true sense, as he always tried to provide in-depth knowledge to his students as well as to common people. A true social worker, he stood by everyone in any situation and was an epitome of inspiration for the youth. He was the assistant general secretary of the Sadou Asom Nabin Lekhak Lekhika Santha, a governing body member of LGB Girls’ College, president of the managing committee of Sonitpur Bidyapeeth, secretary of Baan Theatre, member of Tarun Asam Sangha, and several other social, cultural, and educational organisations. In 1992, he also served as a member of the Tezpur Municipal Board representing the Asom Gana Parishad. He had three books to his credit. As the then chief editor of ‘Saptahik Ba Batori’ and assistant editor of ‘Sadiniya Sambad’, published from Tezpur, he also carved a niche for himself in the field of journalism, besides making regular contributions to the popular dailies of the state as a columnist and writer of great versatility. A popular stage actor, he also acted in a number of telefilms. The award, instituted by the ‘Hemanta Kumar Baruah Smriti Rakhya Samiti’ to keep alive his memory and contributions to society, carries a citation, phulam gamosa, seleng, memento, japi, cash prize, and a packet of books, etc.
