NAGAON, June 23: In an effort to promote road safety awareness and encourage responsible driving habits, the Nagaon district administration organised a motorcycle rally from Nagaon town to Bordowa on Tuesday.
The rally was led by District Commissioner Devashish Sarma and Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das, with the District Commissioner personally riding a motorcycle throughout the 17-kilometre route.
The rally was flagged off by District Transport Officer Simanta Bora from the Nagaon Police Reserve and witnessed participation from members of various non-governmental organisations, youth groups and volunteers.
The programme was jointly organised by the District Road Safety Committee and the Transport Department.
Speaking to the media, DC Devashish Sarma highlighted the growing concern over road accidents in the district.
He informed that 35 road accidents were reported in Nagaon during the previous month, resulting in 22 fatalities.
He stated that the primary causes behind most fatal accidents were riding without helmets, overspeeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Appealing particularly to young riders, Sarma urged motorists to exercise caution while driving and remain mindful of their responsibilities towards their families.
“When a person drives, they must think of their parents and loved ones. If you remember your family, you cannot afford to be reckless,” he said.
The rally culminated at Batadroba Police Station, where an awareness meeting was organised. Addressing the gathering, both the District Commissioner and SSP Partha Pratim Das stressed the importance of road discipline, adherence to traffic rules and responsible driving practices to reduce accidents and save lives.
Among others present at the programme were Batadroba Than-Satradhikar Amlan Jyoti Dev Goswami, Additional Commissioner Gopal Sarma and Additional Superintendent of Police Abutani Pegu.
The rally formed part of an ongoing awareness campaign being undertaken by the district administration to reduce road accidents through community participation, public education and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.
