NAGAON, Sept 23: Sleuths of the Vigilance and Anti Corruption Directorate, Assam arrested one Lat Mandal, identified as Ranjit Mahanta at Nagaon Circle Office campus on Friday while accepting bribe from a complainant for registration of a piece of land.
Sources claimed that the arrested Lat Mandal who was posted at Nagaon Mahrul and Pathori revenue village area, demanded Rs 5,000 as bribe from a person for land registration purpose.
The demanded bribe amount was later reduced to Rs 3,000.
Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the Directorate for taking necessary legal action against the public servant.
Accordingly, a trap was laid on Friday by a team from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam, inside the office of the circle officer and Ranjit Mahanta was caught red handed around 1:40 pm with the accepted bribe of Rs 3,000 which he took from the complainant.
The tainted bribe amount was recovered from the possession of the Lat Mandal in presence of independent witnesses.
A case was registered on Friday itself at the ACB Police Station vide ACB P.S. Case No. 42/2022 U/S 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) in this connection.
Necessary legal follow up actions are underway.
