KOKRAJHAR, Sept 29: The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) is witnessing a rising political influence of the migrant Bengali Muslim community, with four Muslim candidates elected from a single party in the recently concluded BTC elections.
After a five-year hiatus, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), led by party president Hagrama Mohilary, returned to power with a sweeping majority, winning 28 of the 40 seats in the BTC elections.

In this context, the BTC Ulema Council has demanded that three elected Muslim members be included as Executive Members (EMs) in the new council, along with one nominated member.
The demand was made during a press conference at the Kokrajhar Press Club on Monday by BTC Ulema Council president Mohammad Keramat Ali and general secretary Hafiz Jehirul Islam.
Addressing the media, they urged BPF president Hagrama Mohilary to recognise the contribution and representation of the Muslim community by assigning three EM positions and one nominated member post to Muslim leaders elected under the BPF banner.
For the first time in BTC history, four Muslim candidates were elected from a single party, marking a significant rise in the community’s political influence.
Observers note that this development may play a decisive role in shaping the future political course of the region.
BPF won 28 seats, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) 7, and the BJP 5, in the 40-member BTC House.
Hagrama Mohilary is scheduled to take oath as BTC chief on October 5 in a ceremony at Kokrajhar.
Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya and chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma are likely to attend the swearing-in.
On Sunday, Mohilary and his party’s elected members met Governor Acharya to stake claim to form the new BTC government following their resounding victory.
