SILCHAR, May 7: “There are hardly any cities/ towns in our country that has two airports for itself. We have toiled very hard to get a second airport (civilian) for Silchar. The government will not tolerate any forces that are out to scuttle the development process in Silchar.” This was opined by Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy during the oath taking ceremony of Sonai Municipal Board on Wednesday.

Taking a dig at those who are opposing the move to set up the new Airport at Dolu Tea Estate, Dr Roy said, “There are some people who are habituated in criticising each and every positive work of the progressive BJP government, both at the Centre and the state. Such people should remove the black glasses from their eyes to see the multifarious facets of development going on all around.” He further urged everyone to come forward with a positive mindset and co-operate with the government so that Silchar could move forward in its truest stride. “All these years since independence, we were neglected and Silchar witnessed no real development. It’s the present government, which has implemented a number of development projects for the people of this valley,” said Dr Roy.

MP Roy further congratulated all the newly elected Ward Commissioners and urged upon them to work relentlessly for the welfare of the people of their respective areas. “Your victory proves that people have got immense trust and faith in the leadership of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma,” added Rajdeep Roy.

Expressing their views, MLA Silchar, Dipayan Chakraborty said, “It’s indeed a matter of great honour that the people of Sonai have given a clean mandate to candidates of our political party in the Municipal Board election. We assure that the elected Ward Commissioners would toil hard to fulfill all the promises our party made to the people during the campaigning. Our party is known to keep its promises. In the future, we will see more development taking place under the able leadership of our beloved chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarmaji.”

Lakhipur MLA Kaushik Rai lauded the various welfare schemes launched by the present government and said, ” In the past we have witnessed the government who ruled over for almost 70 years has failed to keep their promises and couldn’t achieve success in the field of development of the country but our government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma is promise bound to do more works of development.” In his address, former MLA from Sonai, Aminul Haque Laskar said, “I’m so glad and happy that our party has formed the board and all the newly elected ward commissioners will work for the development of Sonai town and my best wishes to them for their future endeavours.”

Earlier, Cachar DC Kriti Jalli in her speech emphasised on depollution of Sonai town and hoped that Sonai would be promoted as a model town in the state in the future. DC Jalli further stated that Sonai people are lucky enough to get cooking gas connections through pipelines, which were provided earlier.

“New cooking gas connections through pipelines will also be provided throughout the town,” Jalli added.

Notably, a gas-based plant was set up by ONGC at Dhanehari under Sonai assembly constituency of Cachar district, which was formally inaugurated by former Sonai MLA Aminul Haque Laskar.
