GUWAHATI, Sept 9: NF Railway (NFR) has increased its focus on the safety of travellers, especially women who travel alone by long-distance trains. Dedicated teams of women Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, known as ‘Meri Saheli’, have been deployed across the zone to ensure the safety and security of women passengers throughout the rail network. These women RPF officers are responsible for duties such as train escorting and providing security at stations under the Meri Saheli initiative.
Currently, 15 dedicated ‘Meri Saheli’ squads, consisting of female RPF personnel, are functioning at various railway stations across the zone. These squads comprise female RPF officers and staff who look after single women travellers on trains. Additionally, 53 Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTU) are in operation across NFR to protect women passengers from potential traffickers. This year, four women were rescued from being trafficked, and three traffickers were arrested. Up to August 2024, six cases of crimes against women have been detected, leading to the arrest of six criminals.
On average, 10 trains are provided with mixed-escort parties, consisting of both female and male RPF staff, to offer immediate assistance to women passengers in need. To further strengthen security, 46 stations under NFR are now covered with CCTV surveillance systems to create a safer and more secure environment for women travelling by rail. Additionally, doors of stabled coaches are secured to prevent any crimes against women within railway premises.
The RPF of NFR has been working proactively to ensure the safety and security of women passengers. Measures have also been taken to promote women’s empowerment and address the needs of women personnel while performing their duties.
