GUWAHATI, July 7: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has rolled out a series of comprehensive safety and preparedness initiatives to ensure uninterrupted and secure train operations during the ongoing monsoon season.
According to an official statement, the measures have been taken in light of the region’s high vulnerability to heavy rainfall, landslides, and flooding.
Stationary watchmen have been deployed at critical locations to monitor track conditions and raise immediate alerts in case of any potential threat.
Reinforcement efforts have also been undertaken in flood-prone and washout-sensitive areas, including embankment strengthening, improved drainage, and clearance of natural water flow channels.
Additionally, water level measuring gauges have been installed at key hill section points to facilitate real-time monitoring.
To enhance emergency response capabilities, NFR has pre-positioned relief materials such as boulders, sandbags, and wire mesh at vital locations.
Fully equipped ‘Emergency on Wheels’ trains have been kept on standby with technical staff and essential tools, while Rapid Response Teams have been constituted across all divisions to address incidents like landslides, washouts, and waterlogging with minimal delay.
The Lumding Division has positioned 197 wagons of materials, including 144 wagons of boulders and 53 wagons of quarry dust and shingle, at strategic points like Jagiroad, Khatkhati, Shokhuvi, Maibong, and Badarpur.
Tinsukia Division has deployed 52 wagons, Rangiya 36, Alipurduar 20, and Katihar 40 as part of the monsoon preparedness scale.
Rescue and recovery equipment, including Winch Crabs, Jacks, Tirfors, and Tripods of various capacities, are also available across all divisions.
NFR is working in close coordination with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to receive real-time weather updates.
These alerts support the round-the-clock operations of railway control rooms, enabling timely decisions on train movements and field deployment.
Passengers have been advised to remain updated through official communication channels and cooperate with railway authorities.
The NFR statement reiterated the zone’s commitment to ensuring safety, operational continuity, and passenger convenience throughout the monsoon season.
