Guwahati, Nov 13 : Assam Police have arrested nine more individuals for allegedly posting “offensive” comments on social media following the recent Delhi blast, bringing the total number of arrests in the state to 15.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the development on Thursday, saying the latest arrests were made overnight since Wednesday. “In connection with the offensive social media posts following the Delhi blast, 15 persons have been arrested across Assam so far,” the Chief Minister posted on X.
Those arrested include Rafijul Ali from Bongaigaon, Forid Uddin Laskar from Hailakandi, Inamul Islam and Firuj Ahmed alias Papon from Lakhimpur, Shahil Shoman Sikdar alias Shahidul Islam and Rakibul Sultan from Barpeta, Nasim Akram from Hojai, Taslim Ahmed from Kamrup, and Abdur Rohim Mollah alias Bappy Hussain from South Salmara.
Mr. Sarma reiterated that Assam Police will take a firm stand against anyone glorifying violence. On Wednesday, he had directed police officials to take immediate action against those celebrating the deadly blast online. According to him, around 35 people from various districts have been identified for posting such content.
“We will investigate their links, and if anyone is found to have connections with Bangladesh or any other country, strict action will follow,” the Chief Minister warned. He added that minors and those unaware of their devices being misused would not face arrest, but perpetrators would not be spared.
The investigation follows a high-intensity explosion that tore through a slow-moving car near Delhi’s Red Fort metro station on Monday evening, killing 12 people and leaving several others injured.
