DIPHU, Nov 3: There is a palpable sense of enthusiasm and joy within the Rengma Naga community residing in Karbi Anglong, as the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) has recently declared November 27 a holiday for the celebration of ‘Ngada,’ the post-harvest festival of the Rengma Naga community.

In a notification dated October 5, 2024, the KAAC stated, “The authority of KAAC is pleased to declare a holiday on 27th November on account of ‘Ngada’ – the goodwill festival of the Rengma Naga community, which was previously recognized as a restricted holiday on November 28 each year in the KAAC calendar.”

Congratulating chief executive member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang for this decision, Autonomous Council member Phenpiga Rengma expressed gratitude: “On behalf of the Rengma Nagas of Karbi Anglong, I would like to thank our Hon’ble CEM, Dr. Tuliram Ronghang, for declaring the 27th of November as a holiday on the occasion of Ngada.”

Rengma further explained, “A memorandum was submitted to CEM Tuliram Ronghang by the Rengma Naga Cultural Society, Karbi Anglong, on September 28, 2024. Previously, Ngada was observed as a restricted holiday on November 28 each year. However, we, the Rengma Nagas, felt that this date coincides with the death anniversary of the late Khorsing Terang, the first CEM of Karbi Anglong district (1952). We believe our festival should not coincide with a day of mourning for the people of Karbi Anglong, as we also wish to pay tribute to this great soul on that day.
