TEZPUR, Aug 13: Minister for Water Resources and Information & Public Relations Pijush Hazarika on Wednesday inaugurated the office of the Co-District Commissioner at Rangapara in Sonitpur district, stating that the initiative would bring administrative services closer to the public.
According to an official statement, speaking at the event in the presence of Rangapara MLA Krishna Kamal Tanti, Sonitpur Deputy Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das, Superintendent of Police Barun Purakayastha, the Co-District Commissioner, and other dignitaries, Hazarika said the creation of Co-Districts was a step by the State Government under the leadership of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to strengthen governance through infrastructure development and timely policy implementation.

The Minister said residents of Rangapara would no longer have to travel to the DC’s office in Tezpur for administrative work, reducing both time and travel costs.
He highlighted various schemes, including Orunodoi, Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyaan, and Nijut Moina, which he said have brought transformation in multiple sectors.
Hazarika stated that government recruitment is now conducted purely on merit, with corruption and irregularities in the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) eliminated.
He pointed to improvements in road infrastructure in Rangapara and across the State, as well as the establishment of 16 medical colleges and an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), with plans to further increase medical seats.
He also noted that 1,000 kilometres of new embankments have been constructed in the past five years, which he claimed has significantly reduced flooding.
The government, he said, aims to completely eliminate the problem, alongside measures to remove illegal encroachments from government land to protect the identity of indigenous communities.
According to the statement, 39 Co-Districts were inaugurated in the first phase on October 4 and 5, 2024, and 10 more in the second phase on August 12 and 13, 2025, bringing the total to 49.
