GUWAHATI, July 28: The state-level ‘Deshbhakti Diwas’ event, organised for the third consecutive year by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Assam, in honor of Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan’s death anniversary, saw the active participation of Assam parliamentary affairs; water resources, information & public relations; social justice & empowerment minister, Pijush Hazarika. The event, held at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan Park in Bharalumukh, Guwahati, provided an opportunity for the minister to pay heartfelt respects to the great patriot and reflect on his remarkable struggles and unparalleled service to the nation.
During the event, minister Pijush Hazarika emphasised the historical significance of Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan’s role in preserving Assam’s self-respect. He recalled the attempts made by Syed Mohammad Sadullah, the first chief minister of Assam, to manipulate Assam’s demography by bringing in people from East Bengal through the “Grow More Food” scheme. However, the unwavering courage and patriotism displayed by Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan and Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi thwarted Sadullah’s conspiracy, ensuring that Assam’s identity and dignity were safeguarded. Minister Hazarika also highlighted the importance of upholding Deshbhakta Phukan’s ideals and policies, which continue to hold relevance in addressing contemporary issues, including the challenge of illegal immigration.
In recognition of Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan’s legacy and to instill his ideals in the younger generation, the Assam government, under the leadership of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, had decided to commemorate the patriot’s death anniversary as ‘Deshbhakti Diwas’.
Minister Hazarika announced that from next year onwards, state-wide essay competitions will be organised, focusing on the life and contributions of Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan. The winning entries will be honored at the state level, and their compilation will be published as a book by the Public Relations Department of the state government.
Minister Pijush Hazarika praised this initiative as a means to perpetuate the memory and teachings of the great patriot, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations. “The ‘Deshbhakti Diwas’ event serves as a platform to pay tribute to the unsung hero and remind the people of Assam about the importance of preserving their cultural heritage and national pride,” the minister said.
