DIBRUGARH, Dec 5: Water Resources minister Pijush Hazarika inspected erosion-affected areas at Maijan-Mathola in Dibrugarh on Thursday.
He was accompanied by Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan, Lahowal MLA Binod Hazarika, and Assam Tourism Development Corporation chairman Rituparna Baruah.
During his inspection, Hazarika said the state government has taken various steps to combat the flood and erosion problem in Dibrugarh district.
He mentioned that several projects are ongoing in the district.
“We are continuously working towards making Dibrugarh flood-free and have already taken several steps in this direction. To prevent floods, the construction of water bodies has been planned. Today, I visited a site for the development of these water bodies in the district,” Hazarika said.
The great earthquake of August 15, 1950, measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale, altered the course of the Brahmaputra and lifted the bed level of the river in Dibrugarh by several metres. As a result, the Brahmaputra bed now lies several feet higher than the ground level of Dibrugarh town. Most of the time, the Brahmaputra flows much higher than the ground level.
