MARGHERITA, July 19: In the heart of Margherita Co-District, workers at Powai Tea Estate has univocally been demand for change as for over three years.
The Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) Powai Primary Committee has operated under an ad-hoc structure, sparking growing frustration among the Tea estate dedicated labour force.
Powai Tea estate workers are now rallying for a fully constituted committee to ensure their rights, transparency, and a stronger voice in addressing their concerns.
Rupesh Tanti, a social worker from Powai Tea estate, has emerged as a beacon of hope for the community as in a bold address to the media, Rupesh Tanti raised serious concerns about the prolonged delay in establishing a legitimate union committee.
Rupesh Tanti accused Harinanda Gorh, secretary of Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha Margherita Branch, of allowing the ad-hoc committee to collect annual financial contributions from workers without transparency or accountability.
“Where is the clarity? Where are the answers?” Tanti asked, echoing the sentiments of more than 4000 Tea Estate workers seeking justice and fairness.
Despite repeated appeals to key figures, including Paban Singh Ghatowar, president of ACMS Central Committee, Rupesh Gowala Secretary and also the MLA and Cabinet Minister of Doomdooma Legislative Assembly, ACMS Margherita branch President Gautam Dhanowar, Secretary Harinanda Gorh Powai and the Manager of Powai Estate manager, the workers’ pleas for a proper committee have gone unanswered said Tanti.
“Why has the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha Powai Primary Committee not been fully constituted despite years of demands?” Tanti questioned passionately.
Rupesh Tanti emphasised that the absence of a legitimate committee is stifling Powai Tea Estate workers’ ability to address grievances, secure fair representation and ensure accountability in union activities.
The workers of Powai Tea Estate are now calling for urgent intervention from the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha(ACMS) leadership to restore trust and establish a fully functional committee as their message is clear they deserve a system that uplifts their voices and protects their rights.
“As the workers of Powai Tea Estate stand as a testament to Assam’s rich heritage, the workers’ fight for a fair and transparent union reflects their resilience and determination to build a brighter future, the call for change is loud, and the time for action is now,” said Rupesh Tanti.
