Prof Pona Mahanta Donates Books To Gargaon College Library

SIVASAGAR, May 6: Eminent litterateur and former professor & head, Dept of English, Dibrugarh University, Dr Pona Mahanta, donated a valuable collection of books to Gargaon College Central Library recently, and to felicitate him, the college authority organised a function on Friday. Extolling the invaluable contribution of Dr Pona Mahanta to the academic and literary arena, the principal of the college, Dr. Sabyasachi Mahanta extended his sincere gratitude to Dr. Pona Mahanta for his altruistic and benevolent contribution to the college library.

Formally handing over the book collection, Dr. Pona Mahanta spoke of his long association with Gargaon College and Sivasagar. Recalling the history of the gradual evolution of Kareng Ghar, he opined that Gargaon College too should keep evolving on the path to progress. He remarked that the library of any institution is its soul whose values should be imbibed by the students. Considering the advent of social media and its adverse impact on youth, he urged the student fraternity to work for the development of the Assamese language and literature by practicing reading and writing in Assamese. Dr. Pankaj Nath, the librarian of the college in his address thanked Dr. Pona Mahanta for his generosity and opined that the books gifted by Dr. Mahanta will definitely enhance the resource of the library. Dr. Rina Handique, vice principal of the college expressed hope that the college fraternity including teachers and students shall make proper use of the donated books. The programme was moderated by Debajani Bakolial, assistant professor of Assamese, and was attended by a good number of teachers, non-teaching staff and students of the college.
