DIPHU, Feb 9: In front of the ASDC office, a protest was organised by the Autonomous State Demand Committee Youth Front (ASDCYF) and Karbi Student Association (KSA) in opposition to the actions of the Rachnatmak Nonia Sanyukta Sangh (RNSS). The RNSS has been advocating for land rights to village grazing reserve (VGR) and professional grazing reserve (PGR) land in the West Karbi Anglong district of Assam.
Chandra Kanta Terang, president of ASDC, stated to the media, “Illegal settlers must be removed from village grazing reserve (VGR) and professional grazing reserve (PGR) land in Kheroni, West Karbi Anglong, and from PGR and VGR areas in Howraghat LA constituency under the authority of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC). They are residing there unlawfully. KAAC, established in 1951 under the provisions of the Sixth Schedule, rightfully owns this land. No political party should exploit this situation for electoral gains.”
Premson Bey, president of ASDCYF, expressed opposition to RNSS’s memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu during her recent visit to Shillong, which demanded land rights for VGR and PGR settlers in Karbi Anglong. “We strongly object to RNSS’s actions. Karbi Anglong falls under the Sixth Schedule, and this land belongs to KAAC. Illegal settlers in VGR and PGR areas in Kheroni must be promptly removed,” he emphasised.
Bey reiterated that if the KAAC government hesitates to exercise their rights and powers, those in power have no moral authority to lead the Sixth Schedule council and should resign, allowing others to take their place.
Jemsong Timung, president of KSA, demanded clarification from the local MAC of Kopili constituency, Pawan Kumar, regarding RNSS’s memorandum. “If Pawan Kumar remains silent on this issue, it will indicate his involvement in the memorandum,” Timung added.
