DIPHU/DIBRUGARH, March 25: The assault on Dr Numal Momin, Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, has sparked widespread outrage in Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, and Dibrugarh following an attack by Congress MLA Nurul Huda during the Assembly session on Monday.

The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from political parties, cultural organisations, and citizens across the region.

On Tuesday, Niharson Sangma, the president of the All Assam Garo Cultural Society (AAGCS), condemned the attack on Dr Momin, calling it “an attack on democratic sanctity” rather than a personal assault.

Speaking in Satgaon, West Karbi Anglong, Sangma accused the Congress of undermining the indigenous peoples’ existence and emphasised that the dignity of the legislature must be upheld.

“The dignity of the legislature is paramount; the attack undermines the very fabric of democracy. The responsible MLA should be booked as per the law,” he said.

Dr Momin, a prominent Christian MLA representing Bokajan LAC for his second term, is a respected figure in the region, and the attack has drawn strong reactions.

His supporters, along with BJP workers from Bokajan, staged protests in the evening on Monday.

The protesters, gathered in Bokajan, set ablaze an effigy of MLA Nurul Huda, raising slogans demanding justice for Dr Momin.

The protests, which spread throughout Bokajan, called for swift legal action against the Congress MLA.

In Dibrugarh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Scheduled Tribe Morcha organised a massive protest, demanding the arrest of MLA Huda.

The BJP supporters staged a sit-in at Chowkidingee, before marching to the Dibrugarh DC office.

Holding placards and chanting slogans, the protesters expressed their discontent with the incident and called for immediate action against Huda.

Dibrugarh district BJP president Dulal Bora strongly criticised the assault, calling it a “shameful act”.

He added, “If a common citizen is punished for crimes like assault, why should an MLA be treated differently? The law must be equal for all.”

Bora also insisted that Huda should resign from his position, stating that his actions were an abuse of power and called for strict legal consequences.

The BJP leaders emphasised that failure to act against Huda would set a dangerous precedent, undermining law enforcement and accountability in Assam.

The incident has intensified political tensions and has sparked calls for greater protection of democratic processes in the state.

As protests continue across Karbi Anglong and Dibrugarh, the demand for justice grows louder, with citizens and political groups uniting to hold the responsible MLA accountable for his actions.
