Our Sivasagar correspondent adds: As part of the protest called by the 16-party United Opposition Forum in Assam, several organisations and individuals in Sivasagar organised a demonstration against the implementation of CAA in the state. Sivasagar Police have arrested 16 people so far for their participation in anti-CAA demonstrations. Among the arrested individuals are Bidyut Saikia, secretary, and Ritumoni Hazarika, organising secretary, of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity; Abhijit Chetia, Sundeep Gogoi, Bhaskar Boiragi, and Rahul Gogoi of Chatra Mukti Sangram Samity; Munindra Lahan, Biswa Das, Mamu Begum, Dilwar Hussain, and Rimpi Gogoi of Raijor Dal; and Manjit Bhuyan. SP Subhrajyoti Bora IPS informed this correspondent that they have been arrested for violating a High Court verdict against any call for ‘Sarbatmak Hartal’.
Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi, addressing the media, described CAA as an attack on Assamese culture by the BJP. He emphasised that the Assamese people must vehemently oppose it. Responding to the chief minister’s remark that he would be the first to resign if even one person who entered the state after 2014 is granted citizenship, Gogoi questioned why anyone should accept all who entered the state before 2014. He expressed concern that the BJP plans to grant citizenship to over 15 to 20 lakh Hindu Bangladeshis who entered Assam till 2014 and also to invite the remaining 1.7 crore Hindu people currently in Bangladesh from 2014 to 2026. He urged those who love the state and its people not to vote for BJP.
Shrinkhal Chaliha, a popular social activist, pledged to continue the protest and criticised the notion that only BJP activists are considered patriots while others are labeled traitors in India. He called upon people to participate in mass protests against the BJP and CAA from the historic Ranghar premises. Jintu Mech declared their unwavering commitment to opposing CAA. AASU Sivasagar also organised a procession in the evening to protest against the implementation of CAA.
Our Nagaon correspondent adds: Following the notification of the implementation of CAA across the country by the Union government last Monday, the district unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), along with 30 other ethnic organisations, intensified its protest against the implementation of CAA in the district since late Monday evening. Office bearers as well as other members of the students’ organisation went out on Monday evening and burnt photocopies of the act and its notification.
Continuing its ongoing agitation against the act, the district unit of the organisation also held a torchlight rally on Tuesday evening from its district office at Nagaon Nehrubali. However, the district police administration and other security personnel blocked all the agitators inside the AASU office with iron barricades, leading the participants to stage the protest at its doorstep.
Hundreds of agitators participated in the stir and shouted various slogans against the central government as well as the state government led by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. During the agitation, the participants strongly criticised the BJP-led NDA government at the centre and the state government in the state.
The organisation reiterated that the ongoing agitation will continue until the act is repealed. The participants emphasised that the people of Assam will never accept the act as it will destroy the identity of the Assamese nation as well as the Assamese language in the days to come.
It is pertinent to mention that the agitation was finally abandoned by the students’ organisation after half an hour due to the strict security arrangements of the district police administration.
