MARGHERITA, March 24: The local residents of Jagun took to the streets on Monday, protesting the abduction of Prakash Chetry, a young man who was allegedly kidnapped by the United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent), (ULFA-I), from a stone crusher mill located in 10th Jagun under Margherita Co-District on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
The protesters including family members of Prakash Chetry, members of Nari Mukti Sangram Samity and Satra Mukti Sangram Samity Tirap Jagun Regional committee blocked the NH-315 at Jagun, demanding his immediate release.
Prakash Chetry wife who is a mother of 5 months child expressed her concern and anxiety over her husband’s disappearance.
“My husband is innocent,” she said, “I have nothing else. If my husband is not released, then I and my daughter will be forced to take fatal decisions. This will be my last step,” she said.
Chetry’s wife further questioned the integrity of the investigation by the administration.
“It has been 3 months but the police administration has failed to give us any information about his whereabouts, even our Superintendent of Police never asked about us,” she further said.
She further expressed her anguish saying, “What is the duty of the police? Here at Margherita constituency, eight to nine cases of kidnappings have already happened. What is the police doing? Are they only meant for patrolling?”
The police have launched an investigation, but so far, no progress has been made in tracing Prakash Chetry’s whereabouts.
The local residents have urged the authorities to take immediate action to rescue Prakash Chetry and bring him back home safely.
The protesters blocked the NH 315 causing disruptions to traffic as they chanted various slogans and expressed outrage over the lack of progress in finding Prakash Chetry.
Prakash Chetry’s wife appealed to Paresh Baruah, the commander-in-chief of ULFA(I) to release her husband unharmed.
The protesters warned that if Prakash Chetry is not released, than ten thousands of people will take to the streets in protest.
After four hours of protest, the protesters submitted a memorandum to the chief minister through the Margherita Co-District Commissioner.
