GUWAHATI, July 9: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed amusement on Sunday over Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent “sudden desire” to get real, deeming it as “laughable” and desperate.
Sarma’s remarks were directed at Gandhi’s spontaneous visit to Madina village in Haryana’s Sonipat district on Saturday, where he engaged with locals and spent time with farmers working in the fields. However, Sarma alleged that there was some “heckling of farmers” as Gandhi posed for photographs with them.
Party leaders in Haryana reported that Gandhi took part in paddy sowing, operated a tractor, and shared a meal provided by women laborers in the fields.
In a Twitter post accompanied by a short video of Gandhi interacting with farmers, Sarma wrote, “The sudden desire of the Prince, and his desperation, to get real is laughable! But in your zeal to get captured by your photo & video team, for God’s sake, do not demean the dignity of our Annadatas (food providers).”
Sarma further criticized Gandhi, stating, “The heckling of farmers to pose as a ‘farmer’ is deplorable Mr. Gandhi. Get Real without the Reels.”
It is worth mentioning that Himanta Biswa Sarma himself was once a member of the Congress party before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). (With inputs from PTI)
