DIPHU, July 12: Raton Engti was formally welcomed as the new president of the Karbi Anglong District Congress Committee (KADCC) in a ceremony held at the KADCC conference hall on Saturday.
His appointment comes following a directive from the All India Congress Committee (AICC), which recently reorganised district-level leadership positions.
The post had remained vacant after the passing of former Hills Area Development (HAD) Minister and KADCC president Sum Ronghang.
In the interim, former Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Bidyasing Rongpi, had held the position in-charge.
The AICC has named Raton Engti as president of the KADCC and Augustine Enghee as president of the West Karbi Anglong District Congress Committee.
In addition, Ashok Teron has been appointed general secretary, and Purnima Ronghangpi secretary.
Former MP Birensing Engti, Jagat Sing Engti, and Bidyasing Rongpi have been included as members of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC).
Engti’s arrival was marked with an enthusiastic motor rally starting from Manja, where party members and workers gathered with private cars, three-wheelers, and two-wheelers to escort the newly appointed president.
The rally culminated in a formal felicitation ceremony at the KADCC office, where Engti was honoured by party leaders and supporters.
In his first address as KADCC president, Engti extended his gratitude to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and deputy leader of the opposition and APCC president Gaurav Gogoi for entrusting him with the responsibility.
He assured party members that he would devote his time and efforts to strengthening the party and called for collective cooperation, stating that the party’s resurgence would be a shared responsibility.
Engti launched a scathing critique of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that the recent visit of APCC president Gaurav Gogoi to Karbi Anglong on July 4 and 5 had unsettled the BJP leadership in the district. Describing Gogoi’s tour as politically significant, Engti said it had exposed the misdeeds and corruption of the BJP-led administration.
He accused the ruling party of engaging in smear campaigns against Congress leaders and misusing students for political protests.
He also highlighted the poor state of education in the district under the current administration, pointing to the declining pass percentages in matriculation and higher secondary results.
Addressing the gathering, KADCC president in-charge Bidyasing Rongpi thanked all party members for their support during his interim tenure and expressed confidence in Engti’s leadership.
The felicitation programme was also attended by APCC general secretary Bitupon Saikia and executive member Shrawan Dekaraja, who were present as observers.
Engti informed party workers that party MP Rockybul Hussain is scheduled to visit Diphu on July 14 to review organisational activities.
