Rigorous Imprisonment For One In Jorhat

JORHAT, Aug 12: The Court of Special Judge in Jorhat has handed down a 20-year Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) sentence to an individual convicted of raping a minor girl. Rajen Khudal, the perpetrator, was found guilty under Section 4 (2) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 2012. In addition to the prison term, a fine of Rs 10,000 was imposed on Khudal. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional one year of rigorous imprisonment.

The ruling was delivered by Additional Jorhat District and Sessions Judge Anurag Jintoo Borah, who was presiding as the Special Judge. The judgment was made on Friday following the conviction of Khudal. The judge also directed the case to the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in Jorhat for the potential provision of compensation to the victim for any medical expenses and rehabilitation under the relevant Victim Compensation Scheme, as amended.

The incident took place on March 21, 2019, when Khudal, a resident of a village under Teok Police Station, committed the crime. The victim’s mother filed an FIR regarding the incident on March 22, 2019. During the trial, a total of nine witnesses were examined to establish the case against the accused.
