River ghats banned for Chhath puja in Dibrugarh

DIBRUGARH, Nov 17: The Dibrugarh district administation prohibited youths of or below 18 years of age
from visiting a few ghats of the Brahmaputra during Chhath Puja celebrations.
Keeping in view the rising water level of the Brahmaputra, the east revenue circle officer and Dibrugarh
Municipal Board (DMB) authority by their respective order issued a circular, directing the complete
closure of the Paltan Bazar Ghat, Mohana Ghat and Kachari Ghat for the upcoming Chhath Puja on
November 18 to 20.
On the other hand, in view of the public safety, permission has been given only to the devotees to make
offering to sun and do the Chhath Puja Panchali only at the Tinkonia ghat, Poolbagan (Kalia ghat) and
Maijan ghat.

Recently, two brothers were washed away at in the Brahmaputra at Mohanaghat area while making
offerings to their departed mother.
Due to the rising level of the river, the district administration has taken the precautionary measures for
the safety of the people.
On the other hand, preparations are on in full swing at the ghats where Chhath Puja will be performed.
“Earlier, Chhat Puja was organized in 15 ghats of Dibrugarh, but this time permission nhas bneen given
to organize the puja in only a few ghats. Some people also do the Chhat puja at their homes and make
offerings in an artificial pond,” said Raju Sahu, a local resident.
