TEZPUR, May 6: “The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a progressive realisation and with this we need to develop a robust system for implementing it in our higher education level”, Prof Nani Gopal Mahanta, education adviser to the govt of Assam said this while addressing participants of the online Weeklong Faculty Development Programme on Implementation of NEP 2020 in Higher Educational Institutes organised by the Teaching Learning Centre, Tezpur University.
Mahanta further said that Assam is gearing to launch the NEP 2020 shortly. He explained socio-economic and academic framework under which the state is going to implement NEP. He highlighted some of the challenges that are to be faced and how do we transform the educational system. “One of the challenges is enormous growth of the young population which is to be utilised into some useful resources”, Mahanta said.
“The government wants the academic institutions to become innovative with the use of technology so that students can be offered blended courses, massive open online courses (MOOCs) etc,” Mahanta further advised the stakeholders.
The Faculty Development Program (FDP), which was organised during April 26 2023 to May 2 2023 aimed at making the participants aware of NEP so that it can be implemented effectively in its true letter and spirit in the HEIs of North Eastern Region. A total number of 500 faculty members from 24 states of the country joined the FDP where 14 experts from various fields of expertise shared their views on NEP 2020 in different academic discussion sessions.
The programme was inaugurated by Prof. Dhruba K. Bhattacharyya, former Pro vice chancellor of Tezpur University where he focused on the issue of Education for Sustainable Development. The eleven technical sessions were conducted on various aspects related to NEP 2020 viz. Role of Policy in HE and reforms in Higher Education through NEP 2020, multiple entry and exit, academic bank of credit, faculty enrichment in higher education, restructuring curriculum framework for higher education, etc.
Four vice chancellors of state and central universities took part in a panel discussion to discuss the innovative components of NEP 2020. One of the sessions was taken by Prof Pankaj Mittal, secretary general, Association of Indian Universities.
