Sahitya Akademi holds Nepali literature symposium

BISWANATH CHARIALI, July 8: Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, in collaboration with the Nepali Department of Gyanpeeth Degree College, Nikashi, BTR, organised a one-day symposium on ‘Modern Nepali Poetry and Prose and Nari Chetana’ on July 6 at the college premises, according to a press release.

The inaugural session was chaired by retired teacher Badri Guragain, while Dayananda Bhandari, founder president of the college’s governing body, lit the ceremonial lamp. Renowned dramatist Prithivi Bilash Bhattarai delivered the welcome address.

Advisory board members Durga Khatiwoda and Chandramani Upadhyay delivered the inaugural and keynote addresses respectively.

Dr Rabi Chandra Adhikari, assistant professor at the college, offered the vote of thanks.

The first technical session, chaired by Rajkumar Chetry, featured presentations on the trends of modern Nepali poetry by Rudra Baral, Dr Tilak Sarmah, and Milan Subba.

The second session, chaired by Dr Sanjib Upadhyay, focused on contemporary Nepali prose, with papers presented by Dr Gyatri Newar and Dhakaram Kafle.

The third session on Nari Chetana (women’s consciousness) was chaired by Gita Dahal and saw presentations by Naina Adhikari and Indira Gautam.

This was followed by readings of short stories by Jayantikala Devi and poetry recitations by Geeta Sharma.

The programme was attended by local dignitaries, college students, and members of the public.
