DIPHU, Nov 30: Scooters and certificate of appreciation were distributed among students in a ceremony held at Rangsina Auditorium, Diphu Government College here in Karbi Anglong on Thursday.
The award, Dr Banikanta Kakati Meritorious Award under Pragyan Bharati is given to girl students who have secured 60 per cent and above and to boy students who have secured 75 per cent and above in Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examination conducted by AHSEC.
A total of 506 students from Karbi Anglong West Karbi Anglong were given scooters and appreciation letters.
The scooters and appreciation letters were handed by chief executive member (CEM), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang; chairman, KAAC, Raju Tisso and executive member (EM), KAAC for Education, Richard Tokbi.
Tokbi in his welcome address said the state government under the dynamic leadership of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has introduce the scheme to encourage those students to pursue higher education.
“The award has been named after Dr Banikanta Kakati, a prominent Assamese literary figure, who had immensely contributed to the growth and development of Assamese literature. Today you should be proud of your achievement for being among the handful of students to have achieved the award by virtue of your knowledge, determination and bright academic performance. Like Dr Kakati you should become a pathfinder for parents and society and give them back the merit of your education through contributing to the development and welfare of the district and your locality,” Tokbi said while congratulating the students.
The EM asked the recipients to make the best use of the scooters in reaching colleges on time. Additionally, he also asked them to ride the scooters safely by wearing helmets and not to forget the primary duty as students in attending the college regularly.
CEM, Ronghang in his speech said, “Today is a significant occasion as we could distribute scooters to our meritorious students under Dr. Banikanta Kakati Meritorious Award. The award recognizes not only the academic achievement, but also the dedication of our exceptional students. The deserving students will receive a scooter along with certificate of appreciation. Those scooters are just not symbolic; they represent the ultimate support to continue with your educational journey. Today, I congratulate you for your outstanding achievement. Your dedication has not gone unnoticed and we take pride standing alongside you.”
He also urged to stop ‘bandh culture’ and instead go for education for a bright future.
MLAs, Bidyasing Engleng, Darsing Ronghang and Rupsing Teron, executive members of KAAC and members of Autonomous Council and district commissioner, Karbi Anglong, Madhumita Bhagawati also graced the occasion.
The programme was organised by the department of Education, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).
