SIVASAGAR, May 4: Senior citizens and small-scale investors in Sivasagar are raising serious concerns over the persistent closure of the ATM facility at the Sivasagar Head Post Office, which they say has severely impacted their ability to carry out timely financial transactions.
The ATM, a vital extension of Postal Banking services, was designed to support common and middle-class account holders with small investments. However, locals report that the facility has remained non-functional for prolonged periods, leading to significant inconvenience, especially for elderly customers who rely on the service for routine withdrawals.
The Sivasagar District Senior Citizens’ Forum, in an official statement released today, has expressed deep concern over the continued negligence of the postal authorities in addressing the issue. The Forum criticized the lack of effort in issuing and renewing ATM cards for account holders, adding to the growing list of grievances.
Once a cornerstone of financial services in the region, the Sivasagar Head Post Office is now regarded as one of the most neglected postal facilities in Assam. Stakeholders cite the absence of innovation, no infrastructure upgrades, and poor customer facilities. Long queues and crowded conditions inside the aging building have become a regular challenge for customers.
The Forum has demanded the immediate reopening of the ATM at the Head Post Office and called upon postal authorities to modernize and improve services to meet the needs of the growing number of account holders.
The lack of basic banking services has not only created daily hardships but also calls into question the commitment of postal authorities to financial inclusion and digital access in semi-urban areas like Sivasagar.
