SIVASAGAR, Nov 23: The Department of Labour in Yuva Dal Auditorium observed the “Shramik Kalyan Divas” in the memory of noted labour leader Santosh Kumar Topno here on Saturday.
Addressing the meeting of the workers and leaders — Ishanu Shah — deputy labour commissioner said that a new scheme will be made available for all workers which is linked with the Adhar card, and it will benefit all construction workers of the state.
“Collaborating with ILO, two national seminars were organised to discuss accidental deaths in factories which will provide inputs to workers protection,” she added.
On the other hand, Nakul Chawra, adviser of Santosh Kumar Topna Smriti Rakhya Samity opined that after the death of Topno, the labour minister of the state urged the labour organisations to observe the day officially on November 23 every year.
“The government needs to implement a new scheme to keep alive the memory of Topno,” he added.
Dr Anil Kumar Tanti, in his speech said that Topno first organised Chotnagpuri Sanmilani Chatra Sangathan which paved the way for the Assam Tea Tribe Students’ Association.
“Topno was not a mere labour leader but a visionary for the workers on whose sacrifices the labour community is deriving benefits today,” he said.
Rinki Bora, PRO, Sukapha MultiSpecialty Hospital, Manoj Kr Borthakur, journalist, ATTSA district president, Raj Kishore Bhumij, Brojen Baruah, assistant labour commissioner, and Diganta Tasha, former ATTSA leader were present in the meeting.
