Singpho King passes away; tributes pour in from across state

MARGHERITA, Jan 16: Singpho King Bisa Nong Singpho, a well-known name in Assam, passed away on Wednesday night due to old age-related ailments. He was undergoing treatment for many months at his home located at Bisagaon, a Singpho tribe heritage residence, situated at Bisa Gaon, Ledo under Margherita Co-District.

At the time of death, Singpho was 76 years old.

Bisa Nong was famous for making a significant contribution to the Singpho society as well as to social life. His death sent shockwaves to the entire people of Assam including neighbouring state Arunachal Pradesh.

He was the last king of the Singpho tribe, who resides in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

“The king’s idea was to give equal status to the subjects with equal vision. He practised Rajdharma in his golden way of life that’s why he broke the boundaries and was everyone’s favourite irrespective of caste, creed, race, language, and religion,” said D B Sonar, eminent Tea planter and noted social worker of Margherita.

“Bisa Nang Singpho’s simple speech will always ring in people’s ears, steps taken to harmonise all ethnic groups will always be a symbol of harmony in the hearts of millions of people where without allowing himself to dissolve into the clutches of modernity, the royal honour of the hereditary tradition clan remained intact and set a pattern for the upliftment for the Singpho community is real inspiration for everyone,” said Jagat Changmai, veteran journalist, eminent litterateur, and best friend of Bisa Nang Singpho.

Margherita Journalists Association, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Ledo Xakha Xahitya Xabha, Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) Margherita Regional committee, Tinsukia District Committee, Assam Tea Tribes Student Association (ATTSA) Margherita branch committee, All Assam Tangsa Student Union, All Assam Singpho Student Union, Man Tai Speaking Student Union, All Assam Gaon pradhan Association, veteran journalist of Ledo Jagat Changmai, eminent litterateur and poet Dr Ranjit Dutta and many known dignitaries and organisations of Margherita including Singpho tribes conveyed deep condolence to the bereaved family members of Bisa Nang Singpho. Singpho chieftain Bisa Nang Singpho left behind his wife, 5 sons, 6 daughters, and a host of relatives.
