SIVASAGAR, April 25: As part of his whirlwind campaign for the upcoming Panchayat polls in Sivasagar district, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday addressed a massive gathering of party workers and supporters on the bank of the historic Na-Pukhuri in Rudrasagar, Sivasagar.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister urged voters to exercise their franchise wisely and elect the right candidates to form strong Local Self-Governments (LSGs) at the panchayat level, which, he said, is essential to building a stronger India from the grassroots.

“India has 27 lakh villages, which hold the key to development and the self-realization of every individual,” he added.

Highlighting the achievements of the past decade under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Sonowal said, “The last ten years have been crucial in transforming the lives of common people. While the Congress only raised slogans like ‘Garibi Hatao’ without concrete results, PM Modi conducted the necessary groundwork and launched impactful schemes under the motto ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’.”

He claimed that under Modi’s leadership, 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty and that 14 crore rural women now smile with the benefits of LPG connections under the Ujjwala scheme. Referring to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s vision for an Atmanirbhar Asom, Sonowal said it aligns with the larger goal of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, and urged voters to support this vision.

He also paid tribute to Dr BR Ambedkar for drafting a dynamic and progressive Constitution and cautioned prospective panchayat members against corruption.

“If anyone is found indulging in corrupt practices, the party will take the strictest action against them,” he warned.

Earlier, Tapan Kumar Gogoi, former MP and vice-president of the state BJP executive committee, urged voters and workers to ensure victory in all 27 wards, which would enable the party to elect four Zila Parishad members and bring meaningful change to the district.

The meeting, presided over by district BJP president Bitupon Raidangia, was also addressed by Subhash Dutta, Binita Saikia Dey, and Ankita Dutta.
