Morigaon, Mar 15: With the 2026 Assembly elections approaching, political parties across Assam have begun gearing up by projecting their prospective candidates in different constituencies. However, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has not yet released its list of candidates, sparking speculation among ticket aspirants across the state. Party sources indicate that the BJP’s candidate list is likely to be announced within this month.
In several constituencies, the party is reportedly considering fielding new faces, citing dissatisfaction with the performance of some sitting legislators. The Morigaon constituency is also believed to be among those where the party may opt for a fresh candidate to counter possible anti-incumbency sentiment.
The sitting MLA, Ramakanta Deuri, has faced criticism from some residents of the constituency, who allege that development in the area has been limited during his tenure. According to locals, whatever development has taken place is largely attributed to initiatives taken by the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has visited the district multiple times over the past decade.
Meanwhile, political uncertainty continues to grow within the BJP’s local ranks. Reports suggest a widening rift between the sitting MLA Ramakanta Deuri and the present Chief Executive Member of the Tiwa Autonomous Council, Jiban Chandra Konwar, as well as former CEM Paban Manta and several other ticket aspirants.
The internal divisions became evident during the BJP’s Jana Ashirbad Yatra led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the constituency, where Ramakanta Deuri, Jiban Chandra Konwar, Paban Manta and other aspirants were seen welcoming the chief minister separately.
Political observers say the BJP faces a delicate situation in Morigaon. If the party renominates Ramakanta Deuri, leaders from the opposing faction may resist the decision, potentially affecting the party’s unity during the election. Conversely, if the party chooses a candidate from the anti-MLA group, questions remain about the role the sitting MLA might play in the upcoming election.
As the election draws closer, all eyes are now on the BJP’s candidate list, which is expected to shape the political dynamics in Morigaon and beyond.
