GUWAHATI, June 20: The Assam units of the Students Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the All Assam Krishak Sabha (AAKS) on Monday staged protest demonstrations across the state demanding withdrawal of the Centre’s recently launched Agnipath recruitment scheme. During the protests, more than hundreds of agitators were detained by police from various places of the state.

The mass protests were carried out in Guwahati besides Goalpara, Sorbhog, Kalgasia, Koyakochi, Nagaon and Tinsukia.

Joining the protest carried out in Guwahati, state secretary of the All India Kisan Sabha’s Assam unit Jayanta Gogoi said that the Centre’s Agnipath scheme will harm the integrity and uniformity of the country’s armed forces. Gogoi said, “By introducing the Agnipath recruitment scheme, the Government of India has brought down the sanctity of the country’s defence wings to that of a normal welfare scheme. Agnipath recruitment scheme is nothing other than a compromise with the country’s security and sovereignty.” Stressing that the protest demonstration staged on Monday was not more than a token event, the peasant leader stated that a series of protests will follow until the controversial scheme is withdrawn.

Peasant leader Gogoi further exclaimed that the Agnipath scheme does not guarantee the continuation of jobs even after recruitment. He said that the majority of the youths come out to serve the nation from rural areas and join various wings of the defence forces. However, he said, “Youths of the country are now frustrated. Obvious is the fact that the scheme has mentally paralysed the youths of the country. Even a section of senior army officers too are not happy with the uncertainty of the scheme.”

Gogoi reiterated that the mass protest will not come to an end unless the scheme is rolled back at the earliest.
