NAGAON, Jan 8: A stranded wild elephant wreaked havoc at various locations in greater Nonoi of Nagaon district on Wednesday, leaving the locals in shock.
The elephant strayed away from its herd and went on a rampage at Solmari area near Nonoi causing widespread panic among the locals.
According to eyewitnesses, the elephant was spotted roaming in the area since the previous night, and its presence was confirmed by the forest department officials who rushed to the spot to contain the situation.
The elephant, which had crossed the National Highway 36, was spotted near the Kandali hills.
The movement of vehicles on the highway was disrupted for some time as the elephant crossed the road.
It may be mentioned here that wild elephants have been roaming in the area for the past two months in search of food, causing concern among the residents.
Forest department officials have been trying to drive the herd of elephants back to the forest, but their efforts have been unsuccessful so far.
The residents of the area have been advised to remain indoors and avoid any confrontation with wild animals.
The incident has highlighted the growing human-wildlife conflict in the region, with wild elephants increasingly venturing into human habitations in search of food.
The forest department and local authorities have been urged to take measures to mitigate the conflict and ensure the safety of both humans and wildlife.
