Timber Smugglers Nabbed In Assam

BOKAJAN, May 5: Three timber smugglers were arrested from Kaliyoni river as they were transporting illegally felled logs by the river.

The three identified as Katharson Engti (21), Agasteen Engti (23) and Ajai Engti (25) were arrested under Assam forest Act U/s 24/25/40/41 & 60 (1) and were presented before the Bokajan Sub Division Judicial Magistrate.

The three were caught red handed by ACF of Silonijan Forest Range, Pranab Teron and his staff as they were on a patrol on the evening of May 4. Preliminary investigation reveals that the culprits were acting under the instructions of one Roben Lekthe and the timbers were to be delivered to one Robin Das in Golaghat district. The seized timbers were worth about Rs 10,000 in the market.

It may be mentioned that this is a rare occasion in Karbi Anglong when timber smugglers are arrested. Earlier, timbers along with trucks and other vehicles were seized but the culprits were not found.
