GUWAHATI, July 12: A one-day training workshop on PGS-India Organic Certification (Participatory Guarantee System of India) was conducted at Krishi Niwas, Khanapara on Wednesday.
With the increasing demand for organic produce in both national and international markets, the Assam government has been actively supporting the agricultural sector in meeting the demand through organic farming. However, organic farmers in Assam and the North East region have faced various challenges, including the lack of organic farming certification agencies and the high cost of certification. To address these issues, the Assam Seed & Organic Certification Agency (ASOCA) was recently recognised as the regional council for organic farming certification, starting from May 2, 2023.
Organised by the Assam Seed and Organic Certification Agency (ASOCA), the workshop aimed to provide training and guidance to organic farmers in the state. Farmers engaged in organic farming from across Assam participated in the workshop, which featured renowned scientist Dr Srinivasamurthy R from the National Centre for Organic and Natural Farming (NCONF), Ghaziabad, as the trainer.
The event was attended by esteemed individuals including Dr Ashish Kumar Bhutani, additional chief secretary to the government of Assam & APC, Agriculture department, Mowsam Hazarika, director of ASOCA, Triranga Bharatiya Borah, director of the Horticulture department of Assam, Dr Jiten Kr Das, deputy director of ASOCA, and Mamani Hazarika, assistant director of Agriculture, ASOCA, among others.
