DIPHU, May 19: Tuliram Ronghang on Tuesday said the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam would not affect the Sixth Schedule districts of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong.

Ronghang made the remarks while addressing the BJP’s “Vijay Utsav” programme at Taralangso for the Diphu Legislative Assembly Constituency, where BJP candidate Niso Terangpi secured victory in the recently concluded Assembly elections with a margin of 49,740 votes over APHLC-backed Independent candidate JI Kathar.

Addressing party workers and supporters, Ronghang accused Opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress and All Party Hills Leaders Conference, of spreading misinformation regarding the proposed UCC.

“The opposition parties are misleading people by claiming that Scheduled Tribes will lose their indigenous beliefs once the UCC is implemented. They are falsely stating that traditional sacrificial worship practices and Christian worship services in churches will be prohibited,” Ronghang said.

He asserted that such allegations were baseless and assured that the Karbi community and other indigenous groups would continue practising their traditional customs and religious beliefs without interference.

Commenting on the BJP’s victory in all five Assembly constituencies of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong — Bokajan, Howraghat, Diphu, Rongkhang and Amri — Ronghang thanked voters for their continued support.

“Our victory is the people’s victory. We thank the people of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong for their continued faith in the BJP. It is now our responsibility to raise the region’s issues and developmental needs in the State Assembly,” he said.

Ronghang further stated that BJP legislators from the region, including himself, Surjyo Rongphar, Lunsing Teron, Habbey Teron and Niso Terangpi, would continue pressing for implementation of Article 244(A) of the Constitution to grant Autonomous State status.

He also appreciated BJP workers, including Shakti Kendras, local committees and mandal committees, for strengthening the party’s support base in the hill districts and urged them to maintain the same momentum ahead of the forthcoming KAAC and Municipal Board elections.

Addressing the gathering, Niso Terangpi described her victory as a milestone for women in the region.

“It is for the first time that a woman candidate has won an Assembly election from Karbi Anglong. The BJP’s slogan of ‘Nari Shakti’ has truly been reflected,” she said.

Terangpi also thanked Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tuliram Ronghang for their support during the election campaign. The programme was attended by Amarsing Tisso, MLAs Lunsing Teron, Surjyo Rongphar and Habbey Teron, along with KAAC Executive Members and BJP-EKADC president Roland Killing.
