TEOK, Sept 27: The Department of Political Science at C.K.B. College, Teok, in collaboration with the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT), Ministry of Education, Govt. of India, hosted a significant event – the Two-Day National Seminar on “Technical Terminology in Assamese Language and Culture” on September 22nd and 23rd, 2023. This seminar, inaugurated online by Prof. Girish Nath Jha, Chairman of CSTT, on September 22nd, marked a crucial initiative in the realm of scientific language within the context of the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020.
In his inaugural address, Prof. Jha underscored the vital role of scientific terminology in higher education, particularly in alignment with the NEP-2020’s emphasis on vernacular languages. This focus on regional languages has spurred the need for developing technical terminology for textbooks and academic pursuits. Prof. Jha also lauded CSTT’s significant achievements in disseminating glossaries of technical terms in various regional languages across India. The CSTT, established in 1961 under a Presidential Order pursuant to Article 344 of the Indian Constitution, stands as a pioneering institution dedicated to technical terminology.
The inaugural session, presided over by Dr. Bijoy Krishna Pachani, Principal of C.K.B. College, Teok, witnessed the participation of over 114 attendees representing various colleges and Higher Secondary Schools from Jorhat, Golaghat, and Sivasagar Districts. Dr. Shahzad Ahmed Ansari, Assistant Director of CSTT, and Prof. Naved Jamal of Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour and Keynote Speaker, respectively.
The seminar, as reported by Dr. Dipak Kumar Sarma, the Coordinator of the National Seminar, featured resource persons from diverse disciplines who engaged in extensive discussions on nuances of technical terminology across various fields. The seminar comprised a total of four Technical Sessions conducted over both days.
On the first day, Dr. Anushabda, Assistant Professor of Hindi Department, and Dr. Bipasha Patgiri, Assistant Professor of Linguistics, both from Tezpur University, served as resource persons in Technical Session I and Technical Session II.
The second day witnessed the participation of distinguished resource persons, including Dr. Sudeshna Bhattacharjya, Professor and Head of Sanskrit Department at Gauhati University, Dr. Shreya Barbara of Milestone Education and Research Centre in Guwahati, Dr. Binoy Brot Rajkhowa, Associate Professor of Economics at C.K.B. College, Teok, and Dr. Utpal Saikia, Assistant Professor of Assamese at Kolabari College in Biswanath District, Assam.
This seminar has opened new avenues for pioneering work in the domain of technical terminology within the Assamese language, encompassing all fields of Social Science and humanities. Faculty participants expressed their satisfaction with the insightful technical sessions, recognizing the seminar’s value in enhancing their knowledge.
Dr. Dipak Kumar Sarma, Assistant Professor of Political Science at C.K.B. College, Teok, effectively coordinated the seminar, ensuring its success and fruitful outcomes.
