BOKAJAN, Sept 11: In a major crackdown on smuggling of contraband gold, Assam Police seized 14 gold bars valued at over Rs 1 crore and arrested two persons at a checkpoint on NH 36 along the interstate Assam-Nagaland border in Karbi Anglong on Saturday night.
Acting on specific inputs, a team of Karbi Anglong police led by SDPO John Das, set up a naka check over NH 36 at Lahorijan after learning that a consignment of smuggled gold was being carried by a bus from Manipur.
“We intercepted a Guwahati bound bus and on frisking the passengers, our police team recovered 14 gold bars hidden meticulously inside the shoes of two passengers travelling in the vehicle,” John Das, APS, SDPO Bokajan informed.
The arrested persons have been identified as 24-year-old Md Mohim and 41-year-old Md Masharudin, both hailing from the Thoubal district of Manipur. Meanwhile, an investigation into the matter has been initiated by the Karbi Anglong police.
It needs to be mentioned that smuggling of contraband gold and drugs from Myanmar via Manipur has always remained high through this part of the highway. Earlier, the Karbi Anglong police had seized 49 gold bars valued at Rs 4 crore from a SUV vehicle and arrested two Manipur residents in December, 2021.
Again in January this year, the Karbi Anglong police recovered three gold bars valued at Rs 20 lakh from the possession of a couple travelling in a bus from Manipur. In November, 2019 the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths arrested two youths from Manipur following a massive haul of over 100 gold bars weighing 18.5 kilograms at Manja in Karbi Anglong.
