Heroin Worth Rs 21 Crore Recovered From Nagaland Border

BOKAJAN, Jan 8: Police in Karbi Anglong recovered 4.150 kg of heroin worth Rs 21 crore in two separate operations in Karbi Anglong district bordering Nagaland on Sunday.

In the first crackdown, the police recovered 3.5 kgs of heroin from Dillai Tini Ali on Sunday morning.

Based on a piece of specific information in the movement of drugs along National Highway 36, a police team led by Karbi Anglong superintendent of police Sanjiv Saikia intercepted a Bolero Pick-Up vehicle bearing registration number AS 01MC 4996 near Dillai Tiniali area.

On thorough search of the vehicle, the police team recovered 286 soap boxes containing approximately 3.5 kilograms of heroin meticulously concealed under welding structures inside the floor of the vehicle. Police have estimated the face value of the seized drugs to be over Rs 18 crore in the black market.

Two persons, including the driver and the co-driver of the vehicle, were arrested in this connection.

They are Golap Khandakar (28) and Sahanur Mir (21).

“Both of them are residents of Phulbari village under Tarabari Police Station of Barpeta district. Preliminary interrogation revealed that the consignment was transported from Manipur,” SP Sanjib Kumar Saikia said.

“Further investigation is on to ascertain the exact place of delivery of the consignment,” Saikia said.

Appreciating the move by police, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday tweeted, “This morning @karbianglongpol intercepted a four-wheeler at Dilai Tiniali and seized 286 packets of soap cases containing 3.5 kg Heroin, one of the largest so far. Also apprehended two accused.”

In another operation, 650 grams of heroin was recovered from a Scorpio vehicle in front of CCI guest house in Bokajan on Sunday evening.

“A special Naka was set up in front of CCI Guest house under Bokajan PS and at about 2 pm a black Scorpio bearing registration no AS 01 AL 1677 was intercepted and on being thorough search of the vehicle 50 packets of soap cases containing 650 grams of heroin have been recovered,” said Bokajan SDPO John Das.

Two persons have been arrested in this regard. They are: Isaac L (36) a resident of Makhel in Manipur’s Senapati district and Lombit Moran (46), a resident of Choto Habjan Tea Estate under Makum police station of Tinsukia district.

The vehicle was coming from Dimapur.

Bokajan has become a major transit route for drug trafficking from the infamous Golden triangle to Assam and other parts of the country. The trafficking of drugs is on the rise even as the police and several other central agencies have taken a bold step to check the smuggling of drugs to Assam and other parts of the country.

In the last three years, the police have seized 41.9 kilograms of heroin, 3,09,676 capsules including Spaxmo Proxybon and WY tablets, 17.3 kilograms of Morphine, 8.28 kilograms of Crystal Syabu, 93.4 kilograms of Opium, 2,492 bottles of Codeine based cough syrup, 53.84 quintals of ganja from Bokajan police station area of Karbi Anglong.

A total of 293 people involved with drug trafficking were also arrested till December 2022. But there is no let-up in the situation.
