TEZPUR, Aug 3: Emphasising cultural harmony and inclusivity, Asam Sahitya Sabha principal secretary Debojit Bora on Saturday said that strengthening the Assamese identity requires unity among all communities of the state.
Addressing a cultural programme titled ‘Nrigoshiyyo Nrityar Chhonde-Chhonde…’ organised at Lakshmiram Barua Auditorium in Guwahati by the Mangal Chandi Brahma Institute of Language, Literature and Cultural Research in collaboration with Arohan Foundation, Bora said the Sabha has been reaching out to indigenous communities to understand their concerns and aspirations.
“Communities residing across the hills and plains must co-exist with mutual respect and cultural values. All ethnic groups must be accorded equal dignity on the platform of Asam Sahitya Sabha,” he stated.
The event, held in honour of Mangal Chandi Brahma, also paid tribute to the Koch Rajbongshi and Sarania Kachari communities.
It began with the Sabha’s anthem ‘Chiro senehi mor bhaxa janani’ followed by floral tributes and lighting of the ceremonial lamp.
Seema Kashyap, executive president of the institute, delivered the welcome address.
Among the dignitaries present were Sonbar Barua, president of Asam Sarania Kachari Sahitya Sabha, and Dr Samar Talukdar, a leading figure of the Koch Rajbongshi community.
Barua said preserving traditional items like mukcha, hachda and bermeti was key to sustaining the Sarania Kachari identity.
Dr Talukdar remarked that recognition by the Sabha had given new dignity to Koch Rajbongshi culture.
Showcasing the state’s diverse traditions, performers presented ethnic dance forms including Machmoria (Jakoi), Polu Poha, Nawan Khua, Gowalini, Kushan and Hudum, accompanied by narration explaining their cultural significance.
Convener Akhil Kalita delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging senior Sabha members and social activists.
The programme concluded with the rendition of the state Jatiya Sangeet.
