According to reports, a group of burglars broke into the house of retired teacher Gupta Sarma between 11 am and 3 pm by forcing open the back door.

They allegedly looted jewellery worth ₹17 lakh and about ₹40,000 in cash after breaking open the safes, while no one was at home.

The theft came to light when the family returned and found the safes open and valuables missing. They immediately informed Sootea police, following which a team from Sootea Police Station reached the site for a preliminary investigation.

On Monday, a police team led by ASP (Law & Order) Rupjyoti Kalita, along with Sootea Officer-in-Charge Anu Mech, visited the spot with a sniffer dog and conducted a detailed investigation.
